Integrating Flip Cameras/Moviemaker into the primary classroom setting:
- Where could this application be used?
Flip cameras and Windows Moviemaker could be used in a Year 5 SOSE unit.
- How could this application be integrated?
In groups students could create a mini documentary based around the issue of sustainability. Students could use the flip cameras to record an appeal to the community to 'reduce, reuse, recycle'. The documentary could include interviews, footage of ideas to recycle paper or how to make a worm farm.
- What would students learn?
Students would learn that multi-modal texts can be used as a model for active citizenship in today's society. Students would have the opportunity to develop media literacy skills as they plan and create a storyboard, script and learn about composition ( camera shots and angles ).
- Why should this application be used?
In the 21 century media of all forms are an integral part of our lives and of society in which we live. Students need to be able to participate in this multi-media culture. Students need to have media literacy skills to be able to deconstruct and construct media messages. Students need the skills to share their ideas, interact and collaborate with their peers to make it possible for them to be active citizens in the future.
- Which key learning theory could be addressed?
This activity strongly supports social constructivism learning theory. Students are given the opportunity to explicitly use cultural tools ( media literacy skills ) in real life activities to construct a shared understanding of an issue.
