Integrating Podcasts into the primary classroom setting:
- Where could this application be used?
Podcasts and sound editing software (audacity) can be used in a year 3-7 classroom in an Arts-Media project to develop critical literacy skills.
- How could this application be integrated?
Students could create a podcast for a radio commerical (jingle) to illustrate how the media captures an audiences attention and 'sells' a product.
- What would students learn?
Students would learn how to create a podcast: plan, write a script, record and edit. Students gain an understanding of how language and audio (music) can be used to persuade an audience.
- Why should this application be used?
Podcasts can assist students to gain a deeper understanding of 'talking and listening' - the skills of oral language. Students can become aware of the personal and social purposes for which we use language. By integrating technology students are engaged in a purposeful task, they can work in small groups to research, plan, construct and reflect on audio texts.
- Which key learning theory could be addressed?
This activity supports discovery learning theory (Bruner) as students work in small groups to explore the software (audacity) with teacher support. Students then have the opportunity to engage in a small group to create a radio commercial (Social Activism - hands on learning, connected to real world issues).
